James Edward Nichols

James Edward Nichols, 86, of Roanoke, passed away on Saturday, April 21, 2012. Mr. Nichols was born on May 29, 1925 to the late Jess Nichols and Mary Hurt Nichols in Roanoke, VA. He served in the Navy, fighting for our country in World War II. Following the war, he was employed at N&W for 10 years. Afterward, he provided 28 years of faithful service at General Electric, prior to his retirement. Mr. Nichols enjoyed fishing and hunting, and loved all sports, especially football. He will be remembered as a kind and loving husband, and a generous man that knew not a stranger. In addition to his parents, Mr. Nichols was preceded in death by two brothers, Howard Nichols and Herman Nichols. He is survived by his loving wife of 24 years, Mary Tavenner Nichols; two sisters, Evelyn McGhee and Nellie Jones; numerous nieces and nephews; and sister-in-law, Mildred Moles. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 24, 2012 in the chapel of John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home with Rayshon Cobbs officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Roanoke. The family will receive friends from 12 until 2 p.m. on Tuesday.
