Obituary for James William Cole

James William Cole, 94, of Salem, passed away Monday, January 14, 2019.

He was born in Tazewell County, VA on November 26, 1924 and had been an area resident for over 65 years. James proudly served his country during WWII, in the U.S. Army, serving in General Patton’s Third Army, and served as an MP during the Nuremberg Trials. He was employed for a few years as a coal miner in West Virginia, and later worked as the bleaching room manager at Leas & McVitty Tannery, was a plant manager at Salem Concrete Products, and was known as “the Key Man” at Happy’s Flea Market for over 28 years. He was preceded in death by his mother, Lena Sizemore Cole, his loving wife of 70 years, Mary M. Cole, a son, Michael Cole, and siblings, Ray and Clarence Cole, and Frances Cole Graham.

He is survived by his daughter, Aleta Moore; granddaughter, Angela Collins Young, her husband Matt and their son Arthur; grandson, Manfred Peters, his wife Tonia and their son Mason, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family wishes to take this opportunity to express their sincere appreciation to the staff of Heartland Hospice for their love and care.

Funeral services will be held at 2PM, Friday, January 18, 2019 at the Chapel of John M. Oakey & Son, Salem. Chaplain Dave Vanderpool will officiate. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends beginning one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
