Viola Fapiano (Hogan)
Viola Hogan Fapiano passed quietly in her sleep at home on the morning of October 20th 2018. She would have been 82 in November.

She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Donald John Fapiano of Salem, Virginia, sister Ellen Hogan of Roanoke County, his daughters Eva Marguerite Fishbach of Fonthill, Ontario and Carina Ann Talmo of Anaheim Hills, California, nieces Susan and Jenny Brackett of Irvine , California, grandchildren Austin Bielawski, Paul and Morgan Fishbach, and Sierra Tuff, and great grandchildren Kayla Bielawski, Madyson O'Sullivan, and Lachlan and Everly Fishbach .

The world will miss this brave, bright, compassionate, and beautiful woman. Let her tell you a bit about her life.

I always wanted to be a teacher. North Adams State Teachers College, with its 3 buildings was small enough so that all the students could interact both in and out of class. I loved college and made some lifelong friends.

After graduation, I taught primary grades for four years while I earned my Masters Degree and qualified to teach overseas with the Department of Defense. Those were busy and wonderful years, and every school vacation meant more travel. I got to see the pyramids from the inside, view the Taj Mahal by moonlight, touch the waters of the Ganges, and walk through Red Square in Moscow. I still look for far away places, but now from a cruise ship.

After my tour of duty, I returned home and obtained a position teaching Social Studies. In 1972 I married a wonderful engineer and gained an instant family. When GE transferred Don to Salem, Virginia, I said farewell to teaching and found I had time for other interests. I became active politically in the Women’s Movement, including speeches, marches, and demonstrations in front of the White House. I also had the great opportunity to appear on public interest TV shows to explain or debate the Equal Rights Amendment.

Now my life revolves around my husband and pets (I’ve had a number of cats and dogs), being active in the American Association of University Women, and as frequent hostess for our book club meetings. My far away places are now reached by cruise ships.

When I think of my time at NASTC I am so grateful that those years prepared me for the wonderful things I’ve been able to do with my life.

The adventures continued. Vi never met a cruise she didn't love. We did Alaska, the Baltic, the Mediterranean, the coast of Mexico, North, South, East, and West Caribbean, and land tours of Ireland, England and Italy.... and even as the Parkinson's asserted itself, we danced..... and we danced..... and we danced............

Family and close friends will celebrate Vi's life at her home in Salem.
