Obituary for Josephine Jewell Tyree (Shepherd)

Josephine Jewell Tyree (Shepherd)
Jewell Shepherd Tyree, age 93, went home to be with her Lord on Thursday, July 19, 2018. She was born on Monday, May 18, 1925 to the late Luther and Annie Shepherd. Jewell was an active member of the Peters Creek Church of the Brethren where she taught Sunday School for Junior High Youth and a Senior Adult Class. She also taught kindergarten at Greenvale School for 17 years and was Executive Director for 7 years. She was an advocate for assisting the needy and necessitous children in any way possible. Jewell had a great love for all music especially playing the piano. Her hobbies were studying lighthouses and her love for candles. She often said the candle exemplifies love, peace, and the light that shines from Jesus Christ in us, so we can continuously let our lives shine with love for others. The lighthouse light reminded her that if we have faith in Jesus Christ, his light will guide us safely through storms, trials, tribulations, and into eternal life. Jewell will be remembered for her caring ways for others and her steadfast faith in her Savior, Jesus Christ, and for her witness to his grace. In addition to her parents, Jewell is preceded in death by her husband, John Frank Tyree, Jr.; brothers, Howard, and Wiley Shepherd; sister, Thelma Shepherd Layman; son-in-law, Wayne Carroll; and dear friend and companion, LeeRay Lineberry.
Surviving are her four children, Sandra Carroll Vandergrift (Clark) Roanoke, Va., Gwen Kropff (Jim) Salem, Va., Rhonda Fisher (Paul), Lakeland, Fl., and John Frank Tyree, III (Mikiko) McLean, Va.; grandchildren, Angela C.
