Obituary for Ida Mae Garrison (Evans)

Ida Mae Evans Garrison (known to many as “Mae”), 100, of Roanoke, journeyed to the Spirit World to join her Creator on Sunday, March 25, 2018.

Mrs. Garrison was born November 24, 1917, a daughter of the late Clarence G. Evans and Lillian White Evans. She loved people, especially children and loved to laugh, dance, and sing. She rescued animals of all kinds, large and small. Mae was trained in bookkeeping and office management, worked for the Bureau of Standards and Engraving, the United States Postal Service as a letter carrier, owned and operated the Cherokee Grill in Roan Mountain, TN, was co-owner and Operations Manager for C.J. Garrison Landscaping, and in her later years, she provided palliative care to the aged who were often younger than she. She earned her Associates of Arts Degree in Ornamental Horticulture at the age of 68.

In addition to her parents, Mae was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Jennings Garrison, Sr.; son, Carl Jennings “C.J.” Garrison, Jr.; sisters, Marie Knudsen and Lola Yates; brothers, John Robley “Bob” Evans, Sr. and Patrick Francis “Mike” Evans; and a special nephew, Henry “Mickey” McCormick.

Surviving are her daughter, Ellen Jane Garrison-Weaver and husband, Rob; grandson, James William Garrison and wife, Julia; granddaughter, Alesa Ireland Peace and husband, John; and great grandson, Jonathan Peace; a special niece, Irene “Onie” Buck; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 16, 2018 at Unity Church of Roanoke Valley, 3300 Greendridge Rd., Roanoke, VA 24019.
