Obituary for Albert Montgomery

Albert “Al” S. Montgomery, 81, of Salem, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 11, 2018. He was the husband of Shirley S. Montgomery.

Mr. Montgomery was born September 10, 1936 in Carrol County, Virginia, a son of the late Abraham Lincoln Montgomery and Myrtle Virginia Dalton Montgomery. He served his country as a U.S. Marine in the Korean Conflict. Al also was a long distance truck driver and worked for Richardson Waylon Electric Corporation and Associated Transport. Over the course of his career he earned several safe driving awards. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church, the Agape Sunday School Class, and the Southwest Virginia Walk to Emmaus #145.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Montgomery was preceded in death by a son, Roger Lee Montgomery; daughters, Debra Jean Carico, Virginia Montgomery Adams, Dawn Montgomery Tyler; and grandchildren, Kala Ann Adams and Ashley Renee St. Clair Chaffin.

Surviving are his wife, Shirley; daughters, Melissa L. Weiner of Grove City, OH, Sharon S. Amos and husband, Eddie of Salem; and son, Marty St. Clair and Tammy Kingsbury of Salem; brothers, Arnold Montgomery and wife, Nancy, Harold Montgomery and wife, Karen, of Salem, Hobie Montgomery and wife, Ann of Salem, Ted Montgomery and wife, Pat of Winston-Salem, N.C., Willie Montgomery of Shallotte, N.C., and Donald Montgomery and wife, Joan, of Hillsville; sisters, Elsie Montgomery of Lake Helen, FL, Norma M. Abrams and husband, Mike of Sylvesta, and Nora M. Ashford of Jacksonville, FL; sons-in-law, Daryl Adams of New Braunfels, TX and Chris Tyler of Bel Aire, MD; grandchildren, Amber B. Mitchell and husband, Chris, Mandie B. Williford and husband, Braxton, Marcee Amos and fiancé, Paul McMillan, Kaye Williams and husband, Gary, Jackie Amos, Albert Carico and wife, Heather, David Carico and wife, Bobbie, Melissa Brizendine and husband, Mikie, Stephanie Snider and husband, Claude, Tyler Adams, Jake Adams, Jordan Adams; 16 great grandchildren and 7 great-great grandchildren; and his canine boys, Chase and Cooper.

A funeral service will be conducted at 12 p.m. Thursday, March 15, 2018 at Bethel Baptist Church in Salem with Rev. Hilton Jefferies officiating.

The family will receive friends Wednesday evening, March 14, 2018, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the chapel of John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, Salem.
