Obituary for James Coy Vonderhaar

James Coy Vonderhaar, 82, of Salem, Va., passed away Saturday, December 9, 2017.
Jim was predeceased by his parents, Clem and Mary Ellen Vonderhaar; son, Mark James Vonderhaar; two sisters, Patricia (Hank) Neuhaus; and Betty Vonderhaar. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marlene, sons, Jeffrey and Scott (Cindy) as well as 3 granddaughters, Brittany, Abigail and Brooke. Also surviving is God-daughter Kim Koeing, and niece Sharon Arlinghaus of Fort Thomas, KY.
He retired from Norfolk-Southern Corp. as Director of Risk Management in 1993 after 41 years of service. During his retirement he has done a lot of volunteer work with The League of Aging, and with Meals on Wheels. He loved to read to the Kindergarten students at Fallon Park Elementary. He was Past President and an active member of NARVE, Unit 130.
Jim was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Salem, for over 34 years.
He has been a member of the Finance Council, Project 2000 Building Program, Bible Study and an
active member of Salem Knights of Columbus Council #10015 as well as the 4th Degree Knights.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM, Wednesday, December 13, 2017 at John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, Salem. A funeral mass will be said at 2PM, Thursday, December 14, 2017 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church with Fr. Ken Shuping officiating. Interment will follow at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park. A reception will then follow at the church social hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to OLPH Catholic Church, 314 Turner Rd., Salem, VA. 24153.
