Obituary for Elsie Surface (King)
Elsie Mae Surface, 92, of Salem, VA passed away Thursday, November 16, 2017. She was born May 9, 1925 in Salem, VA a daughter of the late Robert and Thelma Wade King. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Paul I. Surface; and brothers, Clarence and Avon King.
Mrs. Surface retired from Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital with over 25 years of service. She loved crafting, crocheting, yard work and bird watching. She also loved music and taught herself how to play the piano. After retirement she and her husband Paul loved to travel and camp with the many friends they made during their travels.
She is survived by three daughters, Linda Lawson, Carol Huynh and husband, John and Connie Hunter and husband, Bill; brother, Larry King and wife, Sarah; four grandchildren, Audie Whelby, Beau Whelby, Will Hunter and Rhiannon Doss and Jennifer Whitlock and husband, Mike; two great-grandchildren, Vivian and Tripp.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, November 20, 2017 at the chapel of John M. Oakey and Son, Salem with Rev. Carl Goodman officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park, Salem. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made in Elsie’ name to Alzheimer’s Association, 3959 Electric Rd, Roanoke, VA 24018. The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Raleigh Court Health and Rehab for the loving care given to Elsie.
