Obituary for Clara Duffy Scaggs (Duffy)

Clara Duffy Scaggs (Duffy)
Clara Duffy Scaggs, 92, of Salem, passed away on Friday, November 3, 2017.

She was born on Saturday, March 7, 1925, to the late Agnes Lee and Omer Daniel Duffy. Clara graduated from Andrew Lewis High School with the class of 1939. She met a handsome man, the late Preston Scaggs, who was from Middleton, Ohio and a semi-pro baseball player for the Pittsburgh Pirates. They fell in love and were married for 57 years before Preston passed away 16 years ago.

Clara and Pres (as he was known) had two daughters, Margaret S. Brown of Raleigh N.C. and Norma S. Bushnell of Salem, who were raised in a loving, Christian home. They had a wonderful childhood life with their parents.

Clara was a retiree of GE after 29 years of service, and a member of Bethel Baptist Church and the Gleaner Bible Study Class for over 60 years.

In addition to her daughters, she is also survived by several nieces, Shirley Landis of Dallas, Texas, Vicki Erickson of Ohio, and Brenda Bloss of St. Louis, Mo.; nephews, Doug Parris of Salem, Va., Nick Preston of Okla., and Tim Esterhay of Fla.; her best friend, Jean James Cochran, whom she bowled, golfed, and socialized with along with their husbands for over 65 years; and her loving cat, Cami.

Preceding her in death were her sisters, Helen Cisco and Virginia Parris; brother, Norman Duffy; son-in-law, Daniel Bushnell; and nieces and nephews, Michael Duffy and Daniel Duffy.

The family extends sincere thanks to Joan Moser, Carolyn Horton, and Porsha Moon who helped Clara for the last several years. Your love will not be forgotten.

A period of visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, November 5, 2017, at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, November 6, 2017, in the funeral home’s chapel with Rev. Hilton Jeffreys officiating. Interment will be private.
