Obituary for Donald Lester Manning

Donald L. Manning, 73, of Salem, Va., passed away on Sunday, October 22, 2017.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert W. and Glenna M. Manning; brother, Roger Manning; his first wife, Doris J. Manning; and his son, Kevin S. Manning.

He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Cindy S. Manning; his daughter, Candice A. Manning; son, Joseph S. Berenbaum and wife, Dana; grandchildren, Tate and Taylor Berenbaum; daughter-in-law, Sandra H. Manning; granddaughter, Amber Hancock; two nieces; many cousins; and extended family.

Donald started working at a young age delivering newspapers and working in his father’s grocery store. He raced cars, participated in demolition derbies, and played guitar in a rock and roll band. He also owned a used car lot and restored old cars, including Ford Thunderbirds and his very special 1957 black Oldsmobile. He served in the U.S. Army and was later employed by Norfolk Southern for 37 years.

Donald was a dedicated and loving son, husband, father, and grandfather. He was a humble, selfless caregiver to his family and close friends.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, October 25, 2017, at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, October 26, 2017, in the funeral home’s chapel with Rev. Bobby J. Pickle officiating. Interment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park.
