Obituary for Roy Eugene Hedge

Roy Eugene Hedge, 81, of Salem, passed away on Monday, October 16, 2017 at his home in Salem. He was with devoted wife and caregiver, Betty, and surrounded by his family. Roy was born in Pulaski County, Virginia to the late Glenn and Margaret Scott Hedge on July 27, 1936.
Along with his parents, Roy was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Hedge; and nephew, Robbie Hedge. He is survived by his wife, Betty Bayne Hedge; brother William N. Hedge (Sylvia); sisters, Wanda Harris (Billy) and Joyce Jackson; sister-in-law, Elaine Bayne Gregory (Charlie); brothers-in-law, James Bayne and Eugene Bayne; and numerous nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews; as well as his constant companion, Little “Brandi”.
Roy served his country by joining the U.S. Marine Corps at the young age of 17. He was a tough drill sergeant and was honorably discharged as a sergeant E-4. He worked as an automotive parts representative for various companies during his career. Roy enjoyed playing golf, cooking on the grill (which he was a master) and all Nascar activities. His greatest passion and dream was to restore his 1957 Chevy!
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Roy Habib and Gentle Shepherd Hospice for their excellent care during this difficult time, especially to Becky, Sandi, and Mary. Thank you to Charles Gregory, Scott, Lynskey, and Patsy Owens for helping Betty care for Roy at home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Roy’s name to the charity of your choice.
The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 19, 2017 at John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, Salem.
