Obituary for Mary Virginia Lester (Osborne)

Mary Virginia Lester (Osborne)
Mary Virginia Osborne Barnard Lester, 77, died peacefully at her home with her children and sister by her side on September 30, 2017. Formerly of Grundy, Virginia and Richmond, Virginia, she lived in Roanoke, Virginia for 45 years.

She was born in Bramwell, West Virginia on September 17, 1940. She graduated from Grundy High School, attended Queens College, and graduated from Hollins College. She was a devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother and friend. To many, she was regarded as beautiful both inside and out. She was a member of Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church for over 40 years, serving in many roles including circle leader and usher.

She enjoyed traveling, tennis, golf and was an avid reader. She also loved to play card games and board games with her family and was a duplicate bridge life master. Spending time at the lake and beach with her family and friends brought her great joy. Mary Virginia’s ten grandsons were the delight of her life and she spent a lot of her time at their concerts and sporting events. Her home was always welcoming, especially at Christmas when her tree seemed magical. Mary Virginia’s kind eyes and caring nature made all who knew her feel special. This generous spirit inspired many long-lasting friendships.

Mary Virginia was preceded in death by her first husband, Dr. Bill Barnard, her second husband, Jack Lester, her son Kevin Barnard, parents Louise and Ted Osborne, siblings Ted Osborne, Jr., Jimmy, Donnie and Anne Osborne, brother-in-law Jake Hash, and members of the Barnard and Lester families.

Mary Virginia is survived by her son, John Barnard and wife Heather, daughters Brooke Barnard and Meg Clemens and husband Chris, daughter-in-law Doly Barnard and her husband Peter Motzenbecker, sister Linda Hash, brother David Osborne and wife Linda, sister-in-law Judy Osborne, brother-in-law Curtis Barnard and wife Betty, grandchildren John William Barnard III, Stephen Markwalter, Josh Barnard, Christopher Clemens, Andrew Markwalter, Will Clemens, Cole Barnard, James Markwalter, Grant Clemens and Spencer Barnard, step children Bill Lester, Kimberlee Smith and Paige Lester.

A special thank you to her loving caregivers: Amanda, Becky, Cindy, Connie, Joann and Melisha. Heartfelt thanks to the Good Samaritan Hospice team: Gay, Loretta, Karen, Lindsay and Mary.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, October 4, 2017 from 5 to 8 PM at John M. Oakey Funeral Home in Salem, Virginia. The funeral service will be Thursday, October 5, 2017 at 1 PM at Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Andrew C. Whaley presiding. A reception at the church will immediately follow the funeral. A graveside service will follow the reception in Sherwood Memorial Park.
