Obituary for Wayne Richard "Red" Davis

Wayne (Red) Richard Davis, 74, of Roanoke County, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 8, 2017.

Red was first employed by Roanoke County in 1973 as a Motor Equipment Operator and also served as a Parks Maintenance Supervisor. He retired as a Parks Maintenance Foreman in 2005 after more than 32 years of service. In his spare time, he enjoyed gardening, hunting, and fishing. His favorite hobby was spending time with his grandkids.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Robert Coy and Ann Laura Mabry Davis; siblings, Sue Davis, Garland Davis, and Franklin Davis; sisters-in-law, Debbie Davis and Brenda Bryant; brothers-in-law, Kenneth Sledd and James R. Sledd, Jr.; nephew, William C. Sledd, Jr.; and granddaughter, Joan Kennedy Davis Spencer.

His surviving family includes his wife of nearly 56 years, Joan Carol Davis; daughters, Angie S. Davis and Cherie Davis Spencer; grandchildren, Candice A. Bryant and her father, Willie Bryant, and Jonah Scott Davis Spencer and father, Jason Spencer; great-grandson, Gatlin B. Bryant and father, Jacob Musgrove; siblings, Joe Davis, Ruth Jones and husband, Emory, and Alice Rice and husband, Pete; sisters-in-law, Barbara Lamb and husband, Robert, Adena Davis, and Vicky Sledd; brothers-in-law, Gary L. Bryant and William C. Sledd, Sr.; and several nieces, nephews, and close friends.

Special thanks is extended to Amedisys Hospice and niece, Dawn Burch, for the help and care given.

Periods of visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, June 11, 2017, in the John M. Oakey & Son Chapel in Salem. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 12, 2017, also in the chapel, with Pastor Sonny Miller officiating. Interment will immediately follow at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.
