Obituary for Yvonne Marie Dalton "Vonnie" Allmond Maxey

Yvonne Marie Dalton "Vonnie" Allmond Maxey
Yvonne “Vonnie” Maxey, 73, of Salem, passed away Thursday, May 4, 2017.

She was born in Norfolk, Virginia on December 16, 1943, the daughter of the late Charlie Austin and Dorothy Lillian Ferguson Dalton. Vonnie graduated from William Fleming High School in 1962. She began her working career at Michael’s Bakery, after which she was employed with Halmode Apparel for many years. In 1999, she started the job she loved most, a bus driver/aide for the Salem City School district, a position which she held for over 17 years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles L. Maxey, and two brothers, Ronnie and Harold Dalton.

She is survived by her daughters, Deanna Jones and her husband JJ, and Dana Hartman and her partner, Roy Thomas; grandchildren, Zachary, Kasie, and Tristen Cregger, Kelly Fisher, and Hannah Jones; great-granddaughter, Aaliyah Renee Sartin, and a brother, Darrell Dalton and his wife Patrice; Other survivors include her aunts, an uncle, several cousins, nieces and nephews. Also, her beloved dog, Millie or “Moosie” as she called her.

Vonnie never met a stranger, was a loving and caring person, and always made sure everyone had a coat on their back and shoes on their feet. She loved to bake pies, cookies, and cakes for everyone. She loved her home where she had lived for over 50 years and took pride in her yard and her flowers.

The family would like to give special thanks to Carolyn and Angela Bishop for their friendship, love, and support over the years.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 4PM, Saturday, May 13, 2017 at the Chapel of John M. Oakey & Son, Salem. Rev. Rick Elmore will officiate. The family will receive friends for two hours prior to the service, beginning at 2PM, at the funeral home. A private family interment will be held at a later date.
