Obituary for Alexander Ewing "Alex" Conlyn

Alexander Ewing "Alex" Conlyn
Conlyn, Alexander Ewing, 68, of Salem, passed away peacefully April 22, 2017 under palliative care at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital following a courageous battle with cancer. Alex is survived by his wife of almost 30 years, Sharon Hines Conlyn, daughters Elisabeth Conlyn of Richmond, VA, Chelsea Conlyn (boyfriend Mike MacTaggart) of Suffolk, VA, brother Andrew Conlyn (wife Vivian) of Ft. Myers, Florida, brother-in-law, Thomas Hines, of Crewe, VA; and sister-in-law Judy Stoltenberg (husband Mark) of Twain Harte, CA. Many other relatives, friends, co-workers and neighbors mourn his passing as they rejoice in his life and the legacy he leaves behind: his family and the example he set for them of how to live a life of integrity, hard work, faith and love of God and family. He reminds us always to "do our best." Alex was born in 1948 in Washington, D.C. to Andrew Conlyn and Gladys Conlyn. He was a proud UVA Cavalier, and attended law school in Memphis, TN. He was a highly skilled and knowledgeable title insurance attorney, working 26 years for Lawyers Title Insurance in Richmond, VA. He moved to Salem, VA in 2011 to take a position working for the Commonwealth of Virginia at VDOT as a senior assistant attorney general. He often expressed what a blessing it was to have found such a great job and wonderful people to work with in beautiful Salem. Alex enjoyed history, reading, politics, anything related to UVA, traveling to the beach, good food and drink and was ridiculously in love with his wife Sharon. He made the world a better place to be in. His memorial service will be held at Central United Methodist Church in Salem, VA at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 21, 2017 with the family receiving friends starting at 1:00 p.m. Donations in his honor may be made to the Cancer Research Institute at cancerresearch.org or to Carilion Clinic Hospice Volunteers c/o Sue Huntington, 1615 Franklin Road, Roanoke, VA 24016.
