Obituary for Stephen Charles "Steve" Vest

Stephen “Steve” Charles Vest, 67, of Salem, returned to live with our Heavenly Father on Thursday, August 25, 2016.

He was preceded in death by his father, Alvin Vest, grandparents, Frank and Hassie Wimmer; Sam, Alabama and Madeline Vest, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

He is survived by his loving mother, Helen Vest; his wife Gale Vest; a son, Eric Vest and his wife Sally; daughter, Madeline Walk and her husband Brandon; a brother, David Vest and his wife Gail, and most importantly, the LIGHTS of his life, his grandchildren, Jillian, Sam, Piper, Holly and Maebie.

Steve was so proud of his children and grandchildren and would tell anyone and everyone about them. He was an avid NASCAR follower, always pulling for the Wood Brothers. He saw many a race and loved every minute of it. Later in his life, his passion became bluegrass music. Steve could frequently be found pickin’ and grinnin’ on his porch swing waiting for his grandchildren to come over and sing Old MacDonald. He also had a band, “The Sourwood Mountain Boys”. They played “gigs” at the local nursing homes and the VA. His favorite songs were, Will the Circle be Unbroken, Greenville Trestle High and Jimmy Brown the Newsboy.

A memorial service will be held at 6:00 PM, Sunday, August 28, 2016 at The Roanoke Stake Center of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The family will receive friends following the service.
