Obituary for Dr. John David Rice, Sr.

Dr. John D. Rice, Sr., 90, of Salem, died comfortably on Saturday, August 20, 2016 at Brookdale Senior Living in Salem. He was born in Abingdon, VA and was a WWII veteran. He obtained his Bachelors of Science at Florida State in Tallahassee, FL and his Doctorate at Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, TN. He opened his practice in downtown Salem and proudly served his community for some 45 years. If you knew Dr. Rice, you would have known that he loved playing a good game of golf and was a member of Hidden Valley Country Club for many years. He also loved to dance with friends at Billy’s Barn, and in his later years, enjoyed walking in downtown Salem and visiting with old friends. He appreciated all the care and kindness from his caregivers as well. Dr. Rice was preceded in death by his loving wife, Cuba Hawkins. He is survived by his beloved daughter, Rebecca Jane Rapoport; son-in-law, Reid A. Rapoport; and grandchildren, Lindsay and Adam Rapoport, all of Virginia Beach, VA. Dr. Rice loved life and lived it to the fullest staying active until the last few months of his life. Respecting his wishes there will not be a service or donations in his honor.
