Josh the Angler

For Josh Young, Family, and Friends: There are many things I could say about Josh, thinking back over the 10 years when we were really close (from 12 to 22). Josh was more than a friend during that time, he was my older brother and closest confidant- my "road dog" and vacation go-to. There are so many memories that I wish I could share with you about him which might surprise you even more than his big, blue, bug eyes! But the one I will share is seared in my memory more than any other- a fishing trip. Josh Young was a true angler- a real American fisherman and outdoorsman. I never knew how to fish, really, until he asked me to join him one summer in July on the James River outside of Buchanan. On our way to the fish in' hole, I said, "hey, what are we going to use for bait?" Because that was the only thing missing from our supply stash. Josh replied, "we will seine for hellgrammites." You might imagine my response as an amature, "what in the world is a hellgrammite!!?" "Can't we just buy some worms?", I said. I already had a pretty good idea of what a seine was only because it was part of our gear, along with plenty of Mikes Hard Lemonade, cheap chewing tobacco, and cigarettes. Josh liked to chew and spit, I liked to smoke, and we both loved to drink. There has never been a time in my life, since that day when Josh asked me to go fishing with him, when I caught so many large mouth bass! Huge fish! One after another all day. It turns out that fishing for bait with a net (seine) is more work, takes patience, and a group effort, but in the end it pays off- more than one could accomplish on his or her own using a store bought worm. Looking back, I realize that Josh was the first to teach me a very important thing about life, at least in this particular way: having every thing figured out before going on a trip isn't always the best, but relying on each other, along the way, is. That day, I relied on Josh more than he relied on me. Now, I imagine Josh heading out to a big river, rich with all types of life. One hand on the seine and a "dip in", asking to see who will join him on the next, great journey. I will miss you my friend, my best- ever!
