Myrtha Rhodes Collins Cox, 83, of Salem, went to her Heavenly home on Monday, June 13, 2016 following a short illness. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Edward Glen Collins; her parents, Rush and Ruby Rhodes; brothers, Joseph W., Thomas A. and Russell M. Rhodes; two sisters-in-law, Betty H. and Barbara M. Rhodes, and a brother-in-law, James R. Smith.

She is survived by her loving husband, James L. Cox; daughters, Rebecca C. Lawrence and husband Roger, Glenna C. Hungate and husband Darrell, Regina C. Ball and husband Jeff; five grandchildren, Angela Hannah, Eddie and Lucas Ball, Sarah, Alyson and Michelle Cox ; three great-grandchildren, Autumn and Kieley Hannah and Toby Campellone. Also surviving are step-children, James A. Cox; Robert Cox and wife Sonya, and Richard Cox and wife Shelley; three brothers, David Rhodes and wife Carolyn, Jerry Rhodes and wife Linda, Lynnwood Rhodes and wife Kathy; two sisters, Hazel Weathers and husband James, and Linda R. Smith, as well as a host of nieces and nephews.

Although small in stature, Myrtha was a strong woman. She survived cancer twice in her life, never complaining and accepting what God sent her way. She was full of life and always had a smile on her face. Myrtha was a friend and inspiration to all who knew her. She was a long time member of Peter’s Creek Church of the Brethren.

The family would like to take this opportunity to express their special and sincere thanks to Michelle, Myrtha’s ICU nurse at Lewis Gale and Neisha Alderman from Generation Solutions for their loving care.

Funeral services will be held at 2PM, Thursday, June 16, 2016 at Peter’s Creek Church of the Brethren. Pastors Stuart Kelly and Pete Bain will officiate. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM, Wednesday, June 15, 2016 at John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, Salem. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society 2840 Electric Road, Suite 106A Roanoke, Virginia 24018, or to the Alzheimer’s Association 1160 Pepsi Place, Suite 306, Charlottesville, VA 22901.
