Obituary for Ruby Mae Bohon Pugh

Ruby Mae Bohon Pugh
Ruby Mae Bohon Pugh, 88, of Salem, passed peacefully to eternal life with her heavenly father on Friday, June 10, 2016. She was born on February 3, 1928 in Marshall, Va. Ruby was born to a family of 14 brothers and sisters of which 11 lived to adulthood. The foundation of her childhood was built on the challenges of the Great Depression and the love and dependence it brought to her large and close knit family. The Bohon children leaned on each other with a strong bond of love that carried through their entire lives. Ruby played High School basketball and softball on a team that was often made up of her siblings. She accelerated her High School studies to become the first student at Marshall High School to finish one year early in 1944. Ruby followed her sisters Evelyn and Virginia and moved to Salem where she began work at the Hosiery Mill. Soon afterward, she met Carl William Pugh during his furlough from the European Theater in World War II. They married in 1946 and celebrated 65 wonderful years of marriage before Carl’s passing in 2011. Carl and Ruby had two sons, Carl William Jr. and Archie Dean. Ruby’s great love of family that molded her childhood forever remained a foundation of her life. Her home was always open to her family and friends as she insisted upon a hot meal and a place to stay for all visitors. For two years, she and Carl opened their home to two loving nieces, Betty and Judy Thomas. In later years she cared for her first wave of grandchildren, Josh and Luke Pugh, and later at the age of 72, was excited to undertake the role again to care for Ashlyn and Carson Pugh. Each of them brought tremendous love and smiles to her heart. Ruby was so committed to the bond that remained between her brothers and sisters through her life as she looked forward to the annual A&J Bohon Family Reunion which has occurred every year for the last 56 consecutive years. Ruby’s faith and love of God was an important and active part of her life. She attended Bethel Baptist Church for 40 years and later moved to First United Methodist Church in Salem. She was active in both congregations and cherished the friendships she found at church. For the Pugh Family, Ruby was the cornerstone of her family’s faith as she always exhibited her unconditional love of Christ and family. Ruby was preceded in death by her husband, Carl William; her parents, Archie and Juanita; three sisters, Evelyn, Virginia and Sadie; six brothers, Green Berry, Jack, Bill, John Russell, Frank and Donald. She is survived by her children, Carl William Jr. and wife, Debbie, and Archie Dean and wife, Carrie; grandchildren, Josh, Luke and wife Tara, Ashlyn, and Carson; great-grandchildren, Dutch, Ava, Dylan, and Alyssa; sisters, Elizabeth and Joyce; and brother, Leroy. The family would like to offer a special thank you to caretakers Peggy Perrin and Carol Hackney, staffs of Carilion Clinic Palliative Care, Richfield Recovery and Care Center, Good Samaritan Hospice and the members of First United Methodist Church for their prayers and visits. The family will greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 15, 2016 at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 16, 2016 at the First United Methodist Church in Salem. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the First United Methodist Church at 125 West Main Street in Salem Va. 24153.
