Obituary for Helen Crosier Owens

Alice Helen Crosier Owens, age 93, of Shawsville, Va., passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 3, 2016 at her home.

She was born on Friday, June 30, 1922, in the Alleghany Springs area of Montgomery County, Va. to the late John Richard and Ola Lucille Sowder Crosier. Helen was the widow of Irvin E. Owens. Also preceding her in death was a sister, Ann Crosier Surratt Thompson; brothers, Robert Richard, Harold Lee, John (Jack) Ronald, William (Bill) Perry, and James (Jim) Lloyd Crosier; and son-in-law, Arnold Gene Spaulding.

She attended Elliston Elementary School and Shawsville High School. Among her many places of employment was Virginia Maid Hosiery in Pulaski, Maid Bess in Salem, Blue Ridge Overall Factory in Christiansburg, Yale and Towne Manufacturing Company in Salem, and finally Radford Arsenal in Radford where she retired in 1986. She also volunteered at Lewis-Gale Medical Center as a greeter for many years at the front door as well as in the surgical reception area.

In her spare time, she enjoyed gardening, needle work, family gatherings, church services at Seneca Baptist Church in Elliston where she attended faithfully, and the independence she greatly cherished.

Her surviving family includes her loving daughters, Debra Sunderman and husband, Steve, and Judy (Cookie) Spaulding; grandchildren, William (Chuck) Josiah Spradlin II and wife, Donna, Travis Scott Spradlin, and Stephanie Lynn Miles and husband, Claude; great-grandchildren, Tymothy Josiah Spradlin, Aaron Hunter Miles, Trevor Riggins Miles, and Hannah Danielle Miles; sister, Jane Barnett and husband, Richard; sister-in-law, Doris Owens Sowder and husband, David; several nieces and nephews; and many special step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 6, 2016, in the John M. Oakey & Son Chapel in Salem. Her funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 7, 2016, also in the chapel, with Rev. John Collins and Rev. Dwight Haynes officiating. Entombment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem.
