Obituary for Bernard Lee Arthur

Bernard Lee  Arthur
Bernard Lee Arthur, of Roanoke County, passed away Monday, February 29, 2016 at the age of 85. He was born in the Cave Spring area to the late Clarence A. Arthur and Bessie H. Arthur on September 15, 1930. He was also preceded in death by his loving wife, Nancy Wood Arthur; sister, Hazel A. Mitchem; brothers, Garland Arthur, Lyle Arthur and Alvah Arthur; sisters-in-law, Ida S. Arthur and Stranna L. Arthur; and brother-in-law, Mark Mitchem.
He is survived by his son, Michael (Mike) Lewis Arthur and wife Julia; and grandchildren, Lesley Catherine Arthur, Michael Thomas Arthur and Laura Campbell Cannaday. In addition, he is survived by his brother, Ernest (Ernie) Arthur; sisters-in-law, Christine Arthur and Rebecca Arthur; and many nieces and nephews.
Bernard served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. He was employed by the United States Postal Service for 25 years, retiring as a window clerk at the Cave Spring branch in 1990. He was a faithful member of Belmont Presbyterian Church. Bernard enjoyed playing golf at Blue Hills and Hidden Valley golf courses for many years until his health prevented his playing in 2010.
His family will receive friends from 6-8 pm on Wednesday, March 2, 2016 at the John M. Oakey and Son Funeral Home and Crematory, Salem, VA. A funeral service will be held in the chapel of the funeral home on Thursday, March 3, 2016 at 2 pm with Pastor Todd Atkins officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Burial Park in Roanoke.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to be made to Belmont Presbyterian Church, 1005 Ninth Street, SE, Roanoke, VA 24013. The family would like to thank the CCU and sixth floor staff at Lewis Gale Hospital and the staff at the Virginia Veterans Care Canter for the special care they gave him throughout his stay.
