Obituary for Dorothy Lee Kirby Jonas

Dorothy Lee Kirby Jonas
Dorothy Lee Kirby Jonas, 78, of Salem, peacefully went to be with the Lord on Sunday, January 31, 2016.

Dot was born in Max Meadows, and attended Abingdon Presbyterian Children’s Home in Foster Falls where she graduated in 1955. She moved to Cripple Creek where she met her beloved husband, Don. They wed in 1956 and moved to Salem in 1969 where she raised her family and worked at the VA Medical Center for 21 years. Dot was an amazing woman with a beautiful soul. A selfless, thoughtful, loving woman, she spent her life loving her husband and raising her children, grandchildren, and her great-grandchildren. You could always go to Granny Jonas’ house for homemade biscuits and gravy, words of encouragement, and stories of her childhood. She loved her family, fishing, camping, tending her flowers, and would never let a guest go hungry.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James Troy and Berty Fuller Kirby; sister, Ethel Halsey; and grandson, Randy Curtis Glass.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Donald (Duck) Jonas, Sr.; children, Diana Lynn Cornette and husband, Jack, Virginia Carlina Glass and husband, Johnny, Hugh Troy Jonas and special friend, Misti, Donna Lee Hodges and fiancé, John Kurkowski, and Donald Curtis Jonas, Jr. and wife, Mitzi; 7 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; and beloved dog, Izzy.

The family expresses a sincere thanks to the 5 West staff of Lewis-Gale Medical Center for all they did to care for Dot.

A period of visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, February 4, 2016, in the John M. Oakey & Son Chapel in Salem. A service celebrating Dorothy’s life will then begin at 6 p.m. with Chaplain Dave Simon officiating.

Online condolences may be expressed at www.johnmoakey.com.

The Jonas family is being served by John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home and Crematory in Salem, 540-389-5441.
