Obituary for Raymond Glen Delano

Raymond G. Delano, 89, of Salem, Va. and formerly of Flint, Mich., went to be home with the Lord on Tuesday, January 19, 2016 after complications from COPD.

He was born on Friday, July 2, 1926. He was loved by all who came across his path. He served in the Navy during World War II stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 248 and a volunteer at the Virginia Veterans Care Center. Ray was an avid hunter and fisherman. He took every chance he could to be in the woods looking for deer. He loved to be outside, especially working in his vegetable garden, and he was always ready to tell a good story.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond Delano and Katherine Powers; his first wife, Ada Mary Cameron Delano; a daughter, Diane Joy Delano; and a sister, Donna Barry.

He was a devoted and loving husband, father, and grandfather and is survived by his loving wife of 11 years, Doris Delano; children, Raymond Delano and wife, Cyndi, Ted Delano and wife, Brenda, James Delano and wife, Peg, Peggy Odette and husband, Tom, and Danny Delano; two step-daughters, Diane Pullen and husband, Mike, and Donna Shell; brother, Robert Delano and wife, Catherine; and two sisters, Sandy Britton and Carolyn Gordon and husband, Rob. He has also left behind 15 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank all of the doctors and nurses at the Salem VA Medical Center who took wonderful care of him and treated all like family.

Periods of visitation will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, January 25, 2016 at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, January 26, 2016 at the Riverside Evangelical Methodist Church at 1020 Lucas Street in Salem, Va. with the Rev. Brian Gordon officiating. Interment will take place at a later date in Scottville, Mich.
