Obituary for Charlie Laton Oliver

Charlie Laton  Oliver
Mr. Charlie Laton Oliver, 101, of Roanoke, VA departed this life to be with the Lord on Wednesday, December 23, 2015. He was born Tuesday, December 15, 1914, the son of the late Aurelious Reese and Jessie J. Aliff Oliver. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Clifton Oliver and Hubert Oliver; sisters, Ruth Oliver Laprade, Beulah Oliver Brown, Marion Oliver Ferguson, and Emma Oliver.
Charlie is survived by his daughter Charlotte Oliver Harless and husband, Kennith Harless; grandchildren, Mark D. Harless and wife, Marcie, and Darrell L. Harless; great-grandchildren, Andrew Harless, Courtney Harless, and Rachel Harless; and many nieces and nephews. Charlie was a loving husband to the late Ann Farmer Oliver for 73 years.
Charlie served in the U.S. Army for 3 years and is a World War II Veteran. He was a member of the International Sheet Metal Union for local 101 and was the oldest member in this area. Charlie’s life was a light to anyone he came in contact with. He built his life in service to God, his family, and others. He was a member and Deacon of The Garden City Church of the Nazarene for 62 years.
The family will receive friends Monday, December 28, 2015 from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. at John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. A Funeral Service will follow at 2 p.m. in the funeral home’s chapel with Pastor Steve Gordon officiating. Interment will immediately follow at Sherwood Memorial Park.
