Obituary for Park Price Dickerson

Park Price  Dickerson
The Rev. Park P. Dickerson, 81, of Salem, VA, died Tuesday, April 14, 2015 as a result of instant cardiac arrest while swimming at the Salem YMCA. Park grew up in Harrisonburg, VA, but spent his summers at Nace, VA on his grandparents’ farm. In his youth, he was very active in the Boy Scouts, reaching the rank of Eagle Scout.

Park graduated from University of Richmond, ‘55 and Yale Divinity School, ’58. After returning from a Rotary Fellowship in South Africa where he studied at University of the Witwatersrand, he served two rural Baptist Churches: New Salem Baptist Church and Mount Lebanon in Boston, VA. It was during that time that he met and married his wife, Normie. He subsequently served United Church of Christ parishes, including the United Church of Johnson, Vermont; Church of Christ at Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH; and First Congregational Church of Montclair, NJ. In 2000, he retired to Salem.

Park is survived by his wife, Mary Norman (Normie); his daughter, Lynn P. Carmichael, and son-in-law, Clark Scott Carmichael; his son, Benjamin H. Dickerson, and daughter-in-law, Ellen See. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Sean & Sara Carmichael and Victoria & Garrett Dickerson.

In retirement, he has been active in the Rotary Club in Salem, the Salem Museum and the Philo Club of the Roanoke Valley. He was a member of Glade Church, Blacksburg and an associate member of College Lutheran Church, Salem. He loved working in the yard, sailing and swimming at the YMCA.

A memorial service of celebration will take place at 3:00 PM on Saturday, June 27, 2015 at College Lutheran Church in Salem. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to one of the churches listed. An online guest book is available for family and friends by visiting www.johnmoakey.com.
