Obituary for Julie Lynn Slusher Illg

Julie Lynn Slusher Illg
Julie Lynn Slusher Illg was born on February 18, 1958 in bucolic Roanoke, Virginia. She left this earth on Tuesday, October 7, 2014 at 56 years old. Julie was a gentle and generous soul. She loved animals and throughout her life helped so many stray animals, some of them so pitiful that no one else would even touch them. She would give the shirt off her back to help someone in need. She was so intelligent and creative.

Julie was married to Richard Illg on November 24, 1993 in Roanoke and lived in Gretna, Louisiana. They owned The Cottage Cafe in Gretna for about 13 years. Richard was the chef and Julie made it charming and was the perfect hostess for their restaurant patrons.

You were and will always be so loved, Julie. Preceding her in death was her father, William Terry Slusher; her paternal grandparents, Bill and Catherine Slusher; and her maternal grandparents, Thelma Petty Lewis and Clarence H. Lewis. Those of us that you leave behind and will miss you terribly include a mother, Douglas Ann Lewis Slusher; sisters, Gwynn Slusher Hamel and Pamella Slusher and her husband, David Landau; husband, Richard Illg; nephew, Blake Hamel; niece, Brittany Hamel; step-daughter, Jodi Illg McCoy; aunt, Janie Lewis; other family members; many friends; and her stray adopted cat, Miss Kitty.

We are bringing Julie home to Roanoke for her corporal final resting place. To say Adieu to Julie, please join us for a period of visitation on Friday, October 17, 2014 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. Her final resting place will be at Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem where a service of graveside verses will be shared on Saturday, October 18, 2014 at 11:30 a.m. for her spiritual return to God.

In lieu of flowers, kindly support an organization for the protection of animals such as Angels of Assisi at 540-344-8707 or Roanoke SPCA at 540-339-9247. The Illg and Slusher families are being served by John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem, 540-389-5441.
