Obituary for Marianne Newbrough

Marianne Newbrough
Marianne Patricia (Watson) Newbrough of Salem VA passed away peacefully on Sunday June 1, 2014 following a courageous battle with cancer. She was a loving daughter, mother, grandmother and friend. Marianne was a native West Virginian and long time resident of the Roanoke Valley.
She was the devoted daughter of the late Mary Catherine (McGee) and William L. Watson, of Fairmont WV. During WWII, her father gave his life piloting a B-17 Flying Fortress on May 24th, 1944 during a daylight raid of Berlin nearly two weeks prior to D-Day. Marianne was raised by her devoted mother Mary Catherine, supported by a loving extended family that included her grandparents Vella and Patrick J. McGee and Eunice Kildow Smith; Aunt Helen and Uncle Mario Tutalo and her devoted step-father Paul K. (Red) Barret of Fairmont WV. Though an only child, Marianne often referred to her cousins Joyce, KC and John Tutalo as her “brother and sisters.”
Marianne Watson and Robert Newbrough married in 1963 and were blessed with four children – Bill, Becky, Jaci and Jeff. The family moved to the Roanoke Valley in 1969 and lived for a number of years in the Cave Spring area. The marriage ended in divorce and Marianne continued to live in Roanoke and later Salem VA.
Marianne is survived by her devoted children and grandchildren: son William Newbrough, wife Melanie and sons Baraka, Alex of Wheaton MD; daughter Rebecca Porterfield, husband Allen and sons Joshua, Nathan and daughter Taylor of Montvale VA; daughter Jacqueline Smith, husband Steve and sons Christopher, Sam and daughter Alexis of Moneta VA; son Jeffrey Newbrough, wife Terri and daughter Morgan of Bedford VA.
Marianne was a graduate of St. Peter’s Catholic High School in Fairmont WV and attained an associate degree from Fairmont State College. She was a lifelong Roman Catholic and long time member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Salem VA. Marianne was an employee and office manager for Roanoke Distributing (later Virginia Distributing) for over 30 years. Most recently, she was an employee of Novozymes Biologicals Inc. and Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.
There are no words to adequately express our gratitude for the many acts of thoughtfulness and loving support provided by friends, co-workers and caregivers. The family would especially like to thank Carillion Clinic Hospice, the nurses and staff of the Roanoke Memorial oncology unit and Marianne’s devoted friend and daughter in law Terri Newbrough for the countless hours of loving care during her illness. Visitation is scheduled for Tuesday June 3, 2014 from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm at John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home and Crematory, 305 Roanoke Blvd Salem VA. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church at 314 Turner Rd. Salem VA on Wednesday June 4, 2014 at 11 am.
