James “Jim” Taliaferro Nininger Sr., passed away Thursday, February 6, 2014 at age 84. He was born in Roanoke on May 28, 1929. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Peggy Gibson Nininger; son, James “Skip” Taliaferro Nininger, Jr.; and brother, Nathan Vivien Nininger. He is survived by his loving daughter-in-law, Teresa N. Whitlock and her husband, also Jim’s friend, Mitch Whitlock; grandson, James “Jamie” Nathan Nininger and wife Shannon; granddaughter, Tara Nininger Pugh and her husband Luke; great-grandchildren, Nathan, Zoe, Noah, and Jude Nininger and Dutch and Ava Pugh; and many special nieces, nephews, and cousins. Jim was a proud Marine Corps veteran of WWII and the Korean War. He was a survivor of the legendary Chosin Reservoir Campaign. Upon his return from the war, Jim began his career in the construction industry. Jim retired in 2003 as the City of Salem Building Official and Zoning Administrator with 30 years of service. He has resided in Myrtle Beach, SC for the past 11 years. Jim had many special friends from Salem, Roanoke, and Myrtle Beach. Those that knew Jim were enticed by his witty character and entertaining ways. He could always tell a good joke and loved to make others laugh. A graveside service will be held on February 15, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at East Hill Cemetery, located off of East Main Street in Salem. Pastor Roy Kanode will officiate.
