Howard Robertson Peters, age 88, died on
Sunday, December 18, 2005
in the Brandon Oaks Nursing facility in
Roanoke

VA.
He was born in
Richmond
,
VA
on
May 17, 1917
to the Rev. J. Sidney Peters and his wife, Sara Lee Robertson Peters. He
was educated in the public schools of
Richmond
,
Newport News
,
Petersburg
, and
Salem
,
VA.
He received his BA from
Roanoke
College
in 1938, where he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity, his Bachelor of
Theology from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1941, and His Masters of
Theology from the same institution in 1943, where he was a member of the
Friar’s Club. As a theology
student he served Clinton Ave. Presbyterian Church of Trenton, NJ and
Lawrence Road Presbyterian Church of Lawrenceville, NJ. He
was ordained a minister by the presbytery of
New Brunswick
at the Lawrence Road Presbyterian Church on
May 14, 1941
. He returned to the
Methodist
Church
in October of 1943 and was appointed to the Elliston-Shawsville Charge. In
his long career in the United Methodist Conference of Virginia he served
Fairview Methodist Church in Roanoke, Lakeside Methodist Church and Barton
Heights Methodist Church in Richmond, First United Methodist Church in
Charlottesville, Ghent United Methodist Church in Norfolk, Williamsburg
United Methodist Church in Williamsburg, Trinity United Methodist Church
in Alexandria, Monumental United Methodist Church in Portsmouth, and
Crossman United Methodist Church in Falls Church. He
retired in June of 1986 to
Salem
,
VA
and served the Trinity United Methodist Church of Roanoke until 1991. He
was a member of many boards and agencies of the Virginia Conference of the
United
Methodist
Church
, including The Children’s Home, the Hermitage Homes, and the Board of
Ordained Ministry, and the Virginia United Methodist Credit Union. He
was a member of the ministerial associations in all of the cities where
his churches were located and upon occasion served as their president. He
was a member of several historical associations, including the Jamestown
Society. He was the fourth
generation of ministers in his family and his son, John Brandon Peters, is
the minister of

in
Richmond
,
VA.
He is survived by his wife of
60 years, Alice Lindsey Peters; his children, Lindsey Peters Christiansen
and husband Knud Christiansen of Princeton NJ, the Rev. John Brandon
Peters and wife Julie Keyser Peters, of Richmond, VA., Dr. Mary Lee Peters
and husband James Pritchett of Seattle, WA, and Eliza Peters Wagner and
husband, John Wagner of Sterling, VA.; and his brother-in-law, Dr. Warren
Moorman of
Salem
,
VA.
He is also survived by seven
grandchildren, Mark Peters, of
Austin
,
TX
, Molly Christiansen, of
Ann Arbor
,
MI
, Matthew Peters of
Los Angeles
,
CA
, Andreas Christiansen, of
Princeton
,
NJ
Sarah Schwarzbeck and Chuck Schwarzbeck of
Seattle
,
WA
, and Margaret Wagner of
Sterling
,
VA.
Surviving nieces and nephews
include Virginia Moorman Gotlieb of Los Angeles, CA, Elizabeth Kendrick of
Boston, MA, Grace Moorman, Warren Moorman, Jr. and Sara Moorman of Salem,
VA, Susan Little of Winston-Salem, Louise Lee Friend of Friendsville, MD,
and Irving Peters, of Los Angeles, CA.
A memorial service will be held on
Friday, December 23, 2005
at
11 a.m.
at the
First
United
Methodist
Church
in
Salem
,
VA.
